Product Description

Will Burtin pioneered important contributions to international typography and visual design. He is best known as the world leader in using design to interpret science; as a proponent of 'clean,' uncluttered sans-serif typography; and for his large-scale three-dimensional models, which carried the craft and the art of display to new heights. His walk-through models included a human blood cell (1958) and brain functions (1960).

His major achievement: his clarity and ingenuity with models and graphics made complex information easy to assimilate.

The first monograph on Burtin, "Design and Science" illustrates his leadership in five fields: using graphics to visualize science and information (from the 1930s); corporate identity (from the mid-1940s); multimedia (which he called "Integration," from 1948); large-scale scientific visualization in 3-D (from 1958, foreshadowing computer-assisted virtual environments, i.e. CAVEspace); and, with other pioneers, promoting Helvetica in North America.

Illustrations of Burtin's work that have never before been published make this invaluable book essential reading for design professionals and all those interested in design, scientific visualization, imaging and information technology.

The marriage of design and science

Review Date: June 29, 2008
Reviewer: Robert Fripp, Toronto, ON
This cannot be a review because I am a co-author of "Design and Science..." This note alerts readers to reviews that Amazon placed in "Editorial Reviews."

America's leading design commentator, Steven Heller, reviewed "Design and Science..." for the "New York Times Sunday Book Review" (June 1, 2008). Heller writes, in part: "[Will Burtin's] most influential body of work was in the discipline now called information graphics ... [His] most impressive contribution was the marriage of science and design..."

Britain's ace design writer Rick Poynor ("Creative Review" magazine, November 27, 2007, London) leads with, "A meticulously researched and engagingly readable account..."

Professor Michael Burke (Hochschule fuer Gestaltung, Schwabisch Gmund) finds that "Burtin's pioneer work sets out the framework for today's multi-media models and illustrates what can be achieved by an outstanding designer working with enlightened clients."

Dr. Martha Fleming, of King's College, London, and curator and design consultant to Britain's Wellcome Trust, praises the prose while parsing the contents: "[B]eautifully presented examples of Burtin's amazing work."

New York businesswoman Estelle Ellis, who knew the Burtins for decades and Cipe Pineles for longer, writes: "Bravo! 'Design and Science' is a long overdue celebration of Will Burtin's life, work and legacy. Inspirational and heart soaring. In admiration!"

Short Review

I did not know much about Burtin before reading this book. Burtin was a German exile who work as a typographer, graphic designer, and Art Director for Fortune Magazine. Some of Burtin's most lasting and novel accomplishments are his large-scale, multimedia installations that explain scientific matters like how human cells and brains work.
