Braintalk with David Airey from davidairey.com & logodesignlove.com

1. Hi , who are you and what do you do?
My name’s David Airey. I’m self-employed as a graphic designer, specialising in logo design projects. I work from my home-based office in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, having moved here from Northern Ireland in 1999. I author three websites: davidairey.com, logodesignlove.com and logosdesigners.com.
2. Describe a typical day at work?
A lot of my day is occupied with emails, and I start every working day by reading and responding to them. I devote a portion of each day towards brainstorming, researching and sketching, for whatever client project I’m working on at the time. My two blogs also require managing, and I publish a new post on each once every three or four days (I’ll be replying to comments on other days). With self-employment comes accounting, and although I keep telling myself to hire an accountant, I’ve yet to do so. Come on, David. Get it together.
3. What do you enjoy most about your work?
Creativity. Every new project brings a fresh design brief, and I’m always driven to find new sources of inspiration.
4. What do you like least about your job?
Accounting. Haha.
5. What is your worst enemy of creativity?
Negativity. I’m the first to ask for constructive criticism on my work or ideas, but when people leave negative feedback with no justification or alternative suggestion, it’s simply not helpful.
6. What do you do when you start a new project and you have NO ideas?
Take a break. It’s normal to experience a creative block from time to time, and a break from work / the computer can do wonders.
7. What inspires you the most?
Nature and people.
8. Do you listen to music while working? And if “yes” what music do you listen to?
Sometimes I listen to music. Sometimes I have a TV on in the background. Other times I like peace, with the windows open and the sound of the wind and birds. When listening to music, my taste is varied. Some artists I enjoy include Unkle, Groove Armada, St Germain, Portishead, Nick Drake, Al Green, The Doors, Placebo, Mozart, Otis Redding, and many more.
9. How do you deal with criticism?
Calmly. Constructive criticism is an important part of the design industry. It should be welcomed with open arms.
10. What does your workspace look like?
Small but organised. After the summer I’ll be moving country, where I can afford a larger office-space. I’m looking forward to setting up a few easels, as I miss my fine art days.
11. Do you remember the very first web-project in which you were involved?
It was for my portfolio website, and looking back, I cringe. Would you be happy using MS Frontpage? You can view the 30 month evolution of my online graphic design portfolio here.
12. Is there any advice you would give our readers?
Don’t do things in halves. If it’s worth doing, put all your effort into it, because people judge you by your actions.
13. What has been the most fun project to work on so far?
Setting up my blogs, without doubt. I’ve met so many fantastic people through them, and I enjoy the interaction.
14. Imagine yourself in 15 years… what do you see yourself doing?
Sitting on a white sand beach, sipping a cocktail from a coconut shell. Possibly getting a foot massage.
15. Please tell us 3 people who we should do this Interview with (Why them?).
These three people author blogs that I’ve greatly enjoyed for some time. I respect their voices, and the news they bring to my feed reader:
Xavier Encinas of Swiss Legacy.
Antonio Carusone of AisleOne.
Michael Surtees of DesignNotes.
So if you want to visit David you should do that now: davidairey.com, logodesignlove.com and logosdesigners.com.

Thanks again for including me, Thomas, and for featuring my own little corners of the web.
All the very best.
Your welcome
I hope our readers enjoy reading your answers as much as i did

Even I’ve learned a couple of new things about David, like the fact that he still does his own accounting
Thanks for putting this interview together, Thomas.
That’s an interesting layout you’ve got here—a reversed order of columns—sidebar links and ads on the left side, content on the right, something that I rarely see nowadays.
Great stuff, lovely insight. What country is it you are moving to?
Hi Liam, glad you enjoyed the brief insight.
I’m moving back to my home country—Northern Ireland—where the majority of my family live. It’ll be good to see a little more of them, and also to move into a bigger home / office space.
Antonio just send the answers…so stay tuned to read the answers
